Hey Chad, Thanks for sharing the image. You might want to check with your administrator, however, before posting pictures of students on the web. Most schools have a policy on this.

Thank you, Toby, for planning such an effective, friendly first meeting! Thanks to Kia Jane ad others for making the long commute to Lansing. I can feel it -- this is going to be an A+ year for us!

Great Book on Digital Writing Tools

Hi everyone,

I'm excited to announce that one of our long-time MCTE members, Troy Hicks, has a new book out--The Digital Writing Workshop (Heinemann, 2009). I read an early draft of this book and it makes very important connections between our actual classroom practices and the digital tools that are so readily available to us. Check it out!

Site Wins NCTE Excellence Award

MCTE members and friends,

This site has just won the 2009 NCTE Affiliate Award. Here is a bit from the announcement I just received:

State Asking for Feedback on Alternative Certification

The State Board of Education is calling for feedback on the requirements for the Michigan Nontraditional Route to Teacher Certification (MNRTC). This is an opportunity to provide Michigan certification for 18 credits and would let programs like TEACH for AMERICA set up certification separate from Teacher Preparation Institutions. Please take the time to first respond then share the link and encourage response within your professional community. Share it with people in your department, your stude… Continue

Sign in Support of Shelby Teacher

Just when you think it can't happen here: a text is being challenged by a group of conservative parents in Shelby, Michigan. The text in question is Toni Morrison's Song of Solomon , and the teacher is a recent GVSU graduate, Jane Glerum. The name sounded familiar to me, and I remember now that Jane and her class also used my online role-playing game Thoughtcrime a few years ago. Here's a bit from a news article about the case:

Some additions

This is a short note to say that I've added a couple of new pages under "Who We Are." The first is actually on our existing "Affiliate" page--now you can check out all of NCTE's state affiliates, or at least the ones with web sites. You can also find out what MCTE region you belong to and who your regional coordinator is on the new "regional map" page, also under the "Who We Are" feature.

Enjoy!

Kathy Morcom just started a ning for the MSU student affiliate. Will send you the link, which she sent me on Facebook.

Thanks for all your help this week.

Good morning, Robert! I took your great advice and started the "Book Corner" forum. Let me know what you think. Hopefully, some other authors will join. One thing I noticed was the hyperlink function didn't seem to work when I wrote my discussion comment. Thanks for starting this site. Neat!
Have a great day!

Hi Robert:
Great idea! How would I start "Book Corner" so that other teachers felt free to add their books to the ongoing discussion? I wouldn't want it to be just my corner. :)

You can email me (if you'd like) at teachandreach@charter.net or through my website: wendybyard.com.
Thanks!

Hi Robert:
I just joined this site, and I already enjoy it. Thanks for doing this!
I wonder how I could submit a news article? I'm a Mott College teacher and former North Branch High School teacher who has written a new book: Teach and Reach for Classroom Miracles! Lessons on Teaching with love. There's more information on wendybyard.com. There have been some news articles published, especially this nice one by The Fenton Press/Flint Journal: http://www.mlive.com/fenton/index.ssf/2009/02/lake_fenton_graduate_wendy_bya.html. I appreciate any advice. Thanks, Robert! Best of luck with this site.

Rob, would it be possible to create a link to MSU's NCTE-SA on the "Affiliates" page here on the ning? The address is https://www.msu.edu/~ncte/ . Thank you!
