When I had a classroom of my own, I preferred collaborative grouping as a seating plan, face-to-face and side-by-side. Daily experiences in listening, speaking, reading, and writing about the content are more authenic. Too often we expect students t…

I like using teams in my classes, as they are small social units. If someone in a three- or four-person team has not done/is not doing the work, it will be noticed! I try to use teams during brainstorming, as many students find it difficult to brai…

Reading and writing are social acts. What are the keys to getting started with collaborative groups?

Hi, Mary Anna. I checked out your book, and it sounds very exciting. You speak specifically of students in high school. What do you see as the differences in teaching high-schoolers, as opposed to college students? I'm wondering if it would be help…

P. S. I do not buy your defense of teaching writing in a manner that puts the power all in your hands. Students need to take on the responsibility for their learning, and the only way to accomodate this process is by trying out a different role---as…

HI Derri, You may read about my book here: http://www.equinoxpub.com/books/showbook.asp?bkid=355 I don't think there is a debate, as far as I am concerned, about teaching writing. I taught graduate students at MSU for several years as an adjunct…

Some stuff about me

I teach English Comp as an adjunct at Bismarck State College, a two-year school with a strong community-technical component. I freaking love teaching! Unfortunately, my health isn't so great, so I'm cutting back a bit; I'll only be teaching one night class this semester.

Last summer I taught a double-time online course, which was cool; I had students in Texas, Arizona and elsewhere. I hope to be teaching another double-time online course starting in March - this time for deployed servicemembers. Something new the school is offering.

I also write a biweekly column of baby boomer humor for the Bismarck Tribune. It's trying to find the lighter side of getting old and features my husband, St. Pete; his evil inner twin, Pedro; my dearly departed mother, the Virgin Joybelle of Jersey; and her namesake, my spoiled cockapoo Joybelle. If you're interested, check out:

I've also written a novel, which is very exciting. After 35 years of writing this and that, I've put 120,000 words together, and they kind of make sense! I'm still looking for an agent, though; I'll be much more excited if/when I actually sell it!

I came to this group via Hank Kellner, after I contributed to his new book, "Write What You See." Congratulations, Hank!
