- Long and faithful service to the profession of English teaching
- Distinguished leadership not only in his or her own community but also at the state and/or national level
- Inspirational qualities for students and colleagues
- Originality in some form having his or her own special stamp or way
- Academic superiority
- Current member of MCTE

Recipients must meet the following criteria:
- Demonstrated excellence in the teaching of English or Language Arts K-12
- Distinguished leadership at the local and the state level
- High admiration from colleagues and students
- Unique and effective perspectives on teaching English/Language Arts
- A minimum of ten years of teaching experience K-12
- Current member of MCTE
